1.2 Convection Currents and the Mantle

Vocabulary

Heat transfer: when energy moves from a warmer object to a cooler object
Radiation: heat gets transferred through empty space
Conduction: heat gets transferred by direct particles of matter
Convection: heat gets transferred through heated liquid
Density: the measurement of mass there is in a volume of a substance
Convection current: the flow of when heat gets transferred through liquid

Outline

Radiation

  • a flame or and an open fire are forms of radiation
      • these are pretty common around the house

Conduction

  • the heat from a soup transfering to a metal spoon is a form of radiation
      • this happens in a lot of our homes

Convection

  • water heating in a pot is a form of convection
      • this is common use in the kitchen

Convection in Earth's Mantle

  • Earth's mantle responds to heat
    • heat from the core and mantle cause convection currents to form in the asthenosphere
